Singapore, 16 June 2024 –WWF is deeply concerned by the recent oil spill at the Pasir Panjang Terminal. The incident on Friday has significantly impacted marine and coastal ecosystems, with oil washing up on the coastlines of East Coast Park, Sentosa, and other areas.
Oil spills degrade water quality and threaten marine ecosystems by causing habitat loss and contaminating vital resources. They also harm marine life through physical smothering, suffocation, and chemical toxicity, disrupting key species and habitats.
WWF commends the swift response of authorities and local community groups in Singapore. We have extended our offer of support and will continue to monitor the situation. This incident highlights the critical link between healthy ecosystems and human well-being, emphasising the need for coordinated inter-agency and community strategies to prevent future incidents.
Together, we must protect our precious marine resources.
